![]() I should have taken some better shots but I was preoccupied. Auditorily as well as visually active, the leaves move against each other with a constant patter I find reassuring, maybe due to my upbringing in a large and noisy family. I love the way the leaves are held facing every which way, revealing the pale underside of some and the darker upper surface of others. Quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides, is one of my favorite natives. Lots of baby oak seedlings and saplings line the trail too. Up above the Douglas fir zone, this windswept Oregon white oak, Quercus garryana, stands overlooking the Columbia. I took some photos of tree species I encountered on my hike.Īs is typical for the north-facing Oregon side Columbia Gorge hikes, the lower trail goes through an overstory dominated by Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, a species which needs no introduction around here.īigleaf maple, Acer macrophyllum, is the most common deciduous tree species in this section.īigleaf maple leaves can reach up to a foot in diameter, the largest leaves of any North American maple. Although it was a warm day, I started early and enjoyed perfect conditions. Not difficult at all, but at least I gave myself an easy success to build on. Only 1450 feet elevation gain and less than 5 miles out and back. I chose Angel’s Rest as my first warm up hike – I only had the morning, and didn’t want to drive far. Saturday June 22 was a rare, quiet early morning hike in the Columbia River Gorge with just the dog and my camera. Thank you so much for having us!!! I really look forward to returning.Back in late June, I was in a panic over getting in shape to hike up to the Mt St Helens summit, by our permit date, July 2. The neighbourhood has lots to offer! Small stores, restaurants, bakeries, butcher shops.etc. Walking around at night still felt as safe as walking around during the day. We usually walked down to the beach or Malecon and Uber'd home. Diving in the pool when you get home is a reward in itself. We enjoyed walking but it can be quite a climb if you take the wrong route. San Salvador isn't as intensively hilly as some other roads. and it's so close to home! I hear the burgers are fantastic. I stopped in for coffee but ended up ordering huevos rancheros.best food I ate all week. My sister and I thought we would cook.but when you can get meals like a whole roast chicken, potatoes, rice and tortillas for like $10CAD there is kind of no reason to cook ) My last day there I had breakfast at Sol de Luna on Calle San Salvador. There is everything you would need to cook a homemade meal. The appliances were all in great condition. The pool table upstairs looked great with the new felt. I toured the whole house and was equally impressed with all the rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. He is very well trained and his manners are impeccable. Peso does not bark, the roosters make more noise than he does. I liked watching them play, they never got out of hand. He is friends with Mer the cat (it has another name but I forget what it is). Peso is the most wonderful and tiniest Chihuahua I have ever met. Also, and probably most importantly.you need to know about Peso and Mer. I'm happy to call Rob and Whitney (hosts) and Rosario, (housemaid) my friends. Our stay was the BEST!!! The hosts here are friendly, helpful, generous and social but respectful of our privacy at the same time. I met up with her to relax and check out a couple of the local dog rescues. She went down a week early to take Spanish lessons. I joined her after she spent a week there solo. The mattress was more firm than I am used to but it was still very comfortable. The king size bed was perfect for the two of us. My sister booked the Frida room on the second floor with the french doors.
